about
The Artist
Roy Botterell was born in South West London and lived there for 40 years, working as a professional photographer in the advertising and publishing industries.
A passion for art evolved at age 11 after visiting a Cezanne exhibition at the Tate Gallery. His professional life as a photographer enabled him to develop skills in composition and lighting.
In retirement he has concentrated on furthering his development as an artist, continually trying to find fresh ways of communicating his imagery.
In 2000 he moved to his wife´s home town, Lahr, on the edge of the Schwarzwald in South West Germany. Also living part time near the Bodensee, close to the border with Switzerland. Most of his paintings are from these two areas. The landscape and climate being a constant source of inspiration.
To escape the cold winters at home, he has been visiting the Algarve in Portugal and found somewhere new to inspire him with its low winter sun light and spectacular coastline. At this time of year the parched landscape turns shades of green with its twisting cork trees , bent umbrella pines and swaying eucalyptus trees.
